Working Together – Going the Extra Mile in Recovery
We will address both the psychological and physiological aspects of addiction through the 12 step model and various therapeutic and clinical treatments.
The family of the addict/alcoholic also requires attention. Our family program provides the support, education, and counselling necessary to effectively restore and maintain a healthy relationship with their loved one. We will address past experiences, emotional pain and setting boundaries. Families will also be provided resources to gain their own tools for moving forward.
Our alumni will be provided an aftercare plan which includes alumni meetings and group events. This level of peer support is proven to improve the success rate of recovery. Recovery and support does not end upon leaving our campus. It is only the beginning of going The Extra Mile!
“Most people have an inner voice that tells them right from wrong and most parents of addicts have said, “I did not raise her/him this way.” Since this is the majority in addicts’ cases, then we will consider spirituality a personal concept rather than a religious denomination concept.”
-Rod Farrar, Therapist @ Extra Mile Recovery
At the Extra Mile Recovery Center, it is of the utmost importance that our patients feel as though they are being heard and understood. It is through this method that a trusting, therapeutic relationship can be built and produce a foundation for growth, change and freedom. Various methods and techniques are used to encompass the whole patient during the stages of change to better create individualized services. The Extra Mile Recovery Center provides a serene and safe atmosphere that makes our patients want to change rather than them feel as though they are being forced to change.
KEY THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES:
EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing
The goal of EMDR is to reduce the long-lasting effects of distressing memories by engaging the brain’s natural adaptive information processing mechanisms, thereby relieving present symptoms.
The Extra Mile will utilize EMDR to desensitize physiological responses and urges to use substances that stem from triggers.
DBT Informed Therapy:
DBT informed therapy incorporates the DBT skills & principles, but does not require the complete program, Skills Group, DBT Individual with phone coaching. Instead it is “a la cart” in that only the components needed are utilized.
The Extra Mile will focus on assisting patients learning DBT skills and applying them to regulate emotional activations.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
Guided by empirical research, CBT focuses on the development of personal coping strategies that target solving current problems and changing unhelpful patterns in cognitions, behaviors, and emotional regulation.
The Extra Mile will assist patients to identify dominant negative cognitions, distorted thinking and/or thinking errors through homework assignments and educations. Then, specific CBT methods will be used to begin cognitive/thinking restructuring.
12 Step Immersion:
The Twelve Steps are 12 principles and practices originally proposed by Bill Wilson to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a method of recovery from alcoholism.
The Extra Mile has developed an educational curriculum that intertwines this concept with the previous concepts to enhance the patients’ recognition of the simplistic path to change and freedom.
