When it comes to addiction recovery, the first step is often the most difficult to take. For many people, that first step is the process of ridding the body of addictive substances, a process known as detox. To that end, we understand that each person entering rehab has both a unique and dynamic set of needs that simply cannot be addressed properly in a “one-size-fits-all” detox program. That’s why, at Extra Mile Recovery, we provide comprehensive drug and alcohol detox services with various levels of intensiveness to ensure our clients get the individualized treatment they need to get started off on the right foot.
During this initial phase in rehab, our goal is to rejuvenate our clients’ physical wellness and help them restore the energy they need to be active and focused on their recovery. We provide a peaceful, non-hospital setting where clients can get clean safely and comfortably as we begin to prepare them for a successful life in sobriety, now and for years to come.

Understanding Substance
Abuse Detox
Detox is incredibly important to the recovery process — how a client gets clean can set the tone for the rest of their rehab and a life of sobriety. Unfortunately, we know all too well how a “cookie-cutter” approach to detox fails to meet some clients’ needs, and as a result, lets them fall through the cracks.
As the first stage of rehab treatment, drug and alcohol detox lasts an average of 2-7 days depending on the client’s drug of choice and the overall extent of their substance abuse issues. We find that the longer someone is using, the more frequently they use, and the more drugs and/or alcohol that person consumes regularly, the more dependent they become, both physically and psychologically. When addictive substances are withheld, the body can experience withdrawal symptoms as brain function works to recover and normalize.
Common withdrawal symptoms may include:
- Anxiety
- Aches
- Cramping
- Insomnia
- Nausea
- Chills
- Sweating
- Fever
- Seizures
- Delirium Tremors

Why Choose Detox at
Extra Mile Recovery?
Those who attempt the detoxification process alone often return to using drugs or alcohol to relieve the discomfort caused by withdrawal, which is why going through a professional drug and alcohol detox facility in Mississippi where there’s access to an experienced medical and clinical team is the safer, more effective choice. It’s also important to understand that while detox is a crucial first step for many, it’s an acute treatment modality and shouldn’t be considered as a substitute for a long-term addiction treatment program and ongoing therapy.
At Extra Mile Recovery, our years of experience in helping people recover from addiction have shown us that each person’s experience in detox will be different. That’s why one of our core values is to treat the needs of our clients, not just their addiction. This guiding principle is also applied to how we approach detox and is the reason why we provide our clients with access to two different levels of care: Ambulatory Detox and Medical Detox.
Our Detox Programs
in Mississippi
Outpatient
Ambulatory Detox
Our Ambulatory Drug and Alcohol Detox Program has some constants across all our clients. We provide close supervision and attention to each client to determine, and meet, their needs during this transitional time. Special attention is paid to managing withdrawal symptoms, using the assistance of medication to make them easier to handle. As an outpatient treatment model, Ambulatory Detox places clients in a highly supervised, central setting during the day, while allowing them to return to their home environment at night. There are always staff members, clinicians and peers just around the corner to provide support through this difficult time.
Here at Extra Mile, our Ambulatory Detox Program not only safely and comfortably helps clients heal their bodies while detoxing from drugs and alcohol, we incorporate therapeutic services where they can learn more about their addiction and begin healing their mind and spirit, too. We look at the big picture to craft a well-rounded treatment plan for each client, taking into account how their specific addiction, mental health, history with drugs and alcohol, and even personality will shape their path to recovery. We’re also proud to provide specialized addiction treatment to those who have been in and out of multiple different recovery programs with little success, through our Chronic Relapse Program.

Intensive
Medical Detox
Each client’s experience in detox will be different, and some clients need a more intensive level of detox treatment to help manage their period of withdrawal. For instance, individuals who have a long-standing history with alcohol abuse, addiction to benzodiazepines (or “benzos”), or those clients who are working to get clean from multiple substances at once are more likely to experience severe withdrawal symptoms. In these circumstances, we often find that the best – and safest – course of action is to go through a medically assisted detox program.
After we’ve gone over your specific case with you in our admissions process, our clinical team will help determine whether Ambulatory Detox or Medical Detox is the best choice for you. Medical detox involves 24/7 supervision by a team of experienced medical professionals who are available around-the-clock to ensure you have access to the quality and supportive care you need to recover. Medical detox also involves the use of medications intended to stabilize clients and provide comfort through the process of getting clean. This level of alcohol detox or drug detox isn’t required for all clients, but for higher risk cases, we’re happy to be able to provide this option.
