A Comprehensive, Individualized Approach to
1-on-1 Counseling
A substance use disorder doesn’t develop overnight. As we’ve seen time and time again here at Extra Mile Recovery, unpacking addiction can be a complicated process. It’s one of the reasons we work hard to go the “extra mile” for every client, because dedicated, personalized treatment that leverages a range of addiction treatment modalities during counseling can truly address each client’s unique case.

Substance Abuse Counseling
in Mississippi
We offer a variety of therapeutic services during our Residential Inpatient Program, including 12-step programming, group therapy, and family therapy, all of which help our clients open up, work with others, and reconnect to the world around them.
The role of individual therapy, however, is much more personal. This is where clients really dig down to the roots of their addiction, to understand how they got here and how they can move forward into a successful life in recovery. We’ve found that may clients haven’t been given the space to explore their own needs like this before, and benefit greatly from being asked meaningful questions and given a chance to talk through the issues at the heart of their substance abuse.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counseling:
Asking the Right Questions
During individual therapy sessions, our addiction counselors meet with clients one-on-one to explore questions such as:
- What needs weren’t being met in your life that you tried to meet with substance use?
- Why did you start using this substance in particular? What about it seemed like it could help?
- What situations or triggers in your life made you turn to this substance?
- What are healthier things in your life that fulfill your desires?
The obvious goal of individual counseling at Extra Mile Recovery is to define the causes of a substance use disorder and identify possible solutions and alternatives to substance abuse.
So many drug and alcohol rehab centers treat clients as puzzles to be solved and look for quick, “one size fits all” solutions. We treat each client as what they are — a unique person with their own story, struggles, goals, and dreams. That’s what enables us to meet the client on their level and determine not only the root causes of their addiction but also which coping tools and lifestyle changes can make their condition as manageable as possible. Substance abuse counseling is about helping clients understand the problem, and enabling them to find effective solutions.

1-on-1 Substance Abuse Counseling:
Diverse Treatment Modalities
Besides just asking the right questions during individual substance abuse counseling sessions, we believe it’s important to offer different therapeutic techniques, or “modalities,” to help our clients. By combining specialized and flexible therapies, we’re better able to understand our clients and design treatment plans that can make real change.
Some of our key therapeutic techniques include:

- Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), is specialized trauma therapy. This helps clients identify the underlying reasons for their trauma and associate those triggers with new thoughts and actions, which makes the trauma easier to manage. Our Clinical Director, Rod Farrar, is an EMDR specialist.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), focuses on the relationship between thoughts and actions. By both redirecting negative thoughts and changing behaviors, clients can gain more control over their difficult emotions and unhealthy reactions.
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), a form of CBT with a more practical focus. This therapy helps clients make peace with where they are in the recovery process, forgive themselves, and make healthier decisions regardless of painful thoughts.
- Dual-Diagnosis Treatment, which focuses on treating a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health disorder like depression, anxiety, or PTSD at the same time. We carefully address each condition on its own terms, while unraveling how they feed into each other.

The Extra Mile Recovery
Chronic Relapse Program
Individual counseling should meet the individual where they’re at. Many of our clients are at a crossroads in their recovery journey; they’ve been through other rehab programs, and have since struggled and relapsed in their addiction. This isn’t a moral failing. Some programs simply may not have met these clients’ needs, which is why we developed our Chronic Relapse Program.
Individual therapy for those in our Chronic Relapse program is slightly different, because we spend more time looking at past recovery work. Together, our substance abuse counselors and clients explore what causes and triggers of their addiction haven’t been addressed in other programs, and which treatments have and haven’t worked in the past. Our goal with these clients is not to start recovery from square one, but to break the cycle of rehab and relapse by addressing what’s working, what’s not, and reframing the way these individuals internalize the process of recovery.
