Our 12-Step Recovery Model

The 12 Steps is well-known, not only because it’s commonly used around the world, but also because it’s an effective model for helping those in recovery live a successful — and sustainable — life of sobriety. It’s a time-tested method to build a network and leverage the support that comes with it to stay on track inside and outside of treatment.

At Extra Mile Recovery, we stand by the process of believing in something greater, acknowledging past mistakes, making amends, and moving forward. In other words, taking responsibility and making ourselves accountable for our recovery. We’re proud to offer 12-Step programming at our Mississippi rehab center that’s run by experienced recovery specialists and is offered in a way that’s flexible to our clients’ needs.

How We Adapt The 12 Steps at
Extra Mile Recovery

The 12 Steps were developed by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, but in the many years since then, its proven to be an invaluable part of rehab and an effective recovery model that works for people with all kinds of substance use disorders. It considers the physical, mental, and spiritual health of the client to provide a way for them to address their own shortcomings, put their past behind them, and move forward with life — free from any addictive substances.

One of the greatest strengths of the 12-step recovery model is that, while it is a pre-set, step-by-step program,
it’s highly adaptable to each individual’s needs:

  • The 12 Steps require submission to a higher power, but in our 12-Step Immersion, each of our clients choose what that higher power is, so long as it’s greater than themselves and their addiction
  • Clients decide what friends, family, and sponsor they involve in their rehab
  • Every client gets to progress through the steps at their own pace
  • Each step is interpreted by clients in the context of their recovery. For example, Step 4: “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves” won’t look exactly the same for two different people, and that applies to most other steps as well

No matter how the 12 Steps vary client-to-client, it’s still the same process, which makes starting and tracking progress simple. It also makes it easier for those in 12-step programs to relate to each other. No matter a person’s individual experiences, two people on the same step have something in common right away. It puts everyone’s recovery on an equal playing field. As they say in AA, “it works if you work it.”

12-Step Programming with A Recovery Specialist

While clients have a lot of control over their 12-Step Immersion experience, they’re not alone in this journey. Our recovery specialists facilitate discussions about the steps and spirituality in awareness groups, and meet with clients one-on-one, twice a week, throughout rehab.

This dedicated recovery specialist helps our clients define the 12 Steps of recovery around their beliefs and unique addiction, provides guidance, and helps apply the 12 Steps to a life of sobriety. We bring in recovery specialists who have been through our program or programs that are similar to ours, and that includes the immersion of the 12 Steps. This allows them to lend encouragement and meaningful perspective from their own experiences.

The first step for the client will always be admitting that they have a problem, but that’s why they’re at Extra Mile Recovery. Our compassionate staff helps our clients determine how to take the next steps.

Mississippi 12-Step
Group Meetings

4 times a week — 3 offsite, 1 onsite — clients will participate in 12-Step group meetings where they will have an opportunity to learn, share, and gain new perspectives as they progress in their recovery. By speaking honestly about their experiences, the progress they’re making, and the challenges they face in recovery, clients can receive valuable feedback from their peers and from others who truly understand what they’re going through.

These conversations generally begin with “I” statements: “When I see this,” “if I hear that,” “I feel this.” This helps clients learn to speak for themselves, in their own voice, and take responsibility for their thoughts and feelings. Our goal is to foster accountability in a safe and welcoming environment, and our 12-Step Immersion program is designed to allow clients to evaluate themselves and each other in truly productive ways.

Awareness group meetings are supportive and informative. They allow clients to start the 12 Steps of recovery more easily, set manageable goals, and stay on track throughout rehab and into recovery.

The 12 Steps

  1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching a fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Building A Fellowship Community
That Lasts A Lifetime

As a male-only drug and alcohol rehab center in Mississippi, we treat men from all walks of life who are all facing their own unique struggles with addiction. While some clients are experiencing rehab for the first time, others may be trying a new approach to treatment after relapsing elsewhere.

Regardless of a client’s experience with addiction recovery, everyone belongs here, and everyone is committed to helping and supporting each other. Our clients may walk in to treatment with a group of strangers, but our 12-Step recovery approach ensures they walk out knowing they have formed strong bonds with those they can rely on for the rest of their life. That’s the Extra Mile Recovery way.
